What we lay

We specialise in driveways.

Tarmac, block paving and resin bound — that is the bulk of what we do and what we are set up for. A drive that needs widening, one that has sunk and puddles, or a worn-out surface that needs taking up and starting again. We do the digging, the drainage and the surface ourselves.

A freshly laid tarmac driveway with a block paved edge outside a detached house

Tarmac driveways

Hot-laid and rolled while it’s still hot, over a compacted stone base. Quick to lay, cheap to maintain, good for long or awkward drives.

Machine or hand laid · Red or black
A curved block paved driveway with a charcoal soldier course border

Block paving

Individual blocks bedded on sand and vibrated in, so a single damaged block can be lifted and swapped rather than the whole drive patched.

Herringbone · Stretcher · Basketweave
A grey resin bound driveway running the full frontage of a large detached house

Resin bound

Natural stone mixed with clear resin and trowelled to a seamless finish. Water drains straight through it, so there’s nowhere for puddles to sit.

Permeable · Loose-stone free
We also do

The rest of the garden, while we’re there.

Plenty of drives come with a path, a patio or a lawn that needs sorting at the same time. We take those on too — same team, same standard, one visit.

Patios

Laid to a fall away from the house, on a full mortar bed. Jointed and sealed, with the falls doing their job — rain runs away from the house, not towards it.

Indian sandstone · Porcelain · Limestone
An artificial lawn edged by a grey porcelain terrace in an enclosed garden

Artificial turf

Over a proper stone and sand base with a weed membrane beneath, so it stays level. No mowing, no mud, and it stays green through the winter.

Pet friendly · Short or long pile

Paths & steps

Side returns, garden paths and front steps, built to the same standard as the rest of the job — proper falls, proper foundations, no shortcuts on the bits that are easy to overlook.

Paths · Steps · Ramps

Fencing

Closeboard, feather edge and slatted screens, set out square and level along the boundary. Concrete posts and gravel boards where you want them — they outlast timber at ground level.

Landscaping

Whole gardens rather than one surface: levels, retaining sleepers, planting beds, gravel, turf and the drainage that ties it together.

Sleepers · Turfing · Beds & borders
Our promise

The four things people actually ring us up about.

The base gets done properly

Dug out, cleared of spoil and given a solid base underneath. What that base needs depends on the ground and what’s going on top — we work it out on site. It’s the part you never see, and it’s the reason the finished job lasts.

Drainage is planned in

Before anything gets laid we work out where the water needs to go, and we put the drainage in to suit — falls, channel drains or a permeable surface. Done properly, rain runs away on its own and it’s something you never have to think about again.

One team on site

The people who quote the job are the people who turn up to do it. Nothing gets sold on to a subcontractor you’ve never spoken to.

The price is the price

You get a written figure before anything starts, and it doesn’t move unless you ask for something different halfway through.

About me

You’ll be dealing with me.

I’m Joe. I’ve been in groundworks for over ten years, most of that working for other contractors before I decided to do it my own way. I started J2 Patios & Driveways six years ago — no shortcuts, no subcontractors, no messing customers about. It’s still a small, hands-on outfit covering Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire.

Joe — Founder

I quote and run every job myself — the person who prices your drive is the person on site laying it. Over ten years in groundworks and landscaping, six of them running J2.

On site

A few clips, straight off the phone.

Filmed on site the way you'd film it yourself — a walk around when it's done, and what the ground usually looks like before we start.

How a job runs

Six stages, in this order, every time.

Each one only works if the one beneath it was done right. That’s the whole trade in a sentence.

We come and measure

A look at the levels, where the water currently goes and what’s under the existing surface. You get a written price, free, with no one chasing you afterwards.

Dig out and cart away

The old surface and the soft ground under it come out and go in the grab lorry.

Base in and compacted

Whatever base the job calls for, put in and compacted to suit the ground and what’s going on top. This is the stage that decides everything above it.

Edgings and drainage

Kerbs, edging courses and channel drains set on concrete and haunched. Without them the surface has nothing holding its sides in.

Surface laid

Tarmac rolled hot, blocks vibrated in, resin trowelled or flags bedded on a full mortar bed — whichever you chose at the quote.

Swept and signed off

Site cleared, edges swept, waste taken away. We walk it with you before we load the van, not after.

Where we work

Stoke-on-Trent, and roughly twenty miles around it.

If you’re just outside this list it’s still worth asking — it usually depends on the size of the job.

“Couldn’t recommend Joe highly enough. He came out to look at our driveway and was really friendly and professional from the start, took the time to properly understand what we needed – especially given it’s a four-way shared drive, which isn’t the simplest job. Communication throughout was great, and he kept the site tidy while working. He finished the job quicker than he’d originally estimated, without any compromise on quality – the drive looks fantastic. Great value for the standard of work, and we’d happily use him again. Highly recommended!”

“We needed a patio to be laid in our back garden. We already had the slabs and we asked these guys to lay them for us. Wow, what a great job they did!! We are absolutely delighted. They turned up when they said they would and worked hard all day. They returned the following day to finish it off, and it is so well done we are amazed. What a great work ethic they have. They are polite and totally trustworthy. We wholeheartedly recommend them!”
